Annual Meeting & Elections Recap
So, first off I would like to thank the previous board for all their work over the past year and I would also like to congratulate the next board of directors for 2008-2009. These individuals include:
Brian Olver - President
Gregg Ogorzelec - Vice President Administrative
Drew Pokorny - Vice President Social
Errol Graham - Treasurer
Tamara Draper - Secretary
Adam Davis - Swimming Representative
Fritz Hemker - Water Polo Representative
Amy Dantzler - Facilities & Equipment Coordinator
Chris Smith - Development Coordinator
Your new board will be taking over by November and it looks like the team is in excellent hands for the next year.
In other news at the annual meeting, the team decided to raise dues by $5 per month for both swimming and water polo starting in January of 2009. This was done to offset the rising pool rental costs from the city of LA as well as the additional coaching costs. The new dues rates will be $50/month for all workouts and $25/month for polo only practices. This would be the first dues increase for WH2O in over 6 years.
Furthermore at the meeting, everyone saw the reintroduction of the team newsletter. Download your copy by CLICKING HERE. There are a ton of great photos and articles about the team, its social events, as well as some great results from team members who competed throughout the summer. Hopefully the newsletter is continued throughout 2009 and I bet it will be even better.
Now, before I sign off...I want to remind everyone to sign up for the WH2O 26th Annual Anniversary Party & Awards Banquet being held on Sunday October 26th at the San Antonio Winery. Download your RSVP and awards ballot by clicking here. It is always a lot of fun and a great place to see the whole team together.
Thanks again to everyone who attended the meeting and the past & future board. See you at the party.

WH2O Yard Sale Fundraiser This Saturday!
Time to gather your junk...which could be someone else's treasure...in order to raise some money for the team. Daniel Banchik has come forward and volunteered his front yard right off of San Vicente in West Hollywood to be WH2O Flea Market HQ. Thanks Dan!
Over the next 2 weeks please gather anything you would like to donate and bring it to practice. We will have volunteers and board members who will take your items. If you have large items, shoot me an email at president at wh2o.org and I will arrange a time to stop by your house to lug your treasures away or a time when you can drop it off at Daniel's house.
You can donate anything, but I will reference Ash Martin's well crafted list from last year!
* Art & old frames - no not your clay ashtrays from grade school
* CDs, DVDs, box sets
* Electronics
* Computer components - no CRT monitors and nothing from before 2004 please (ink jet printers don't sell much either)
* Clothing - no used underwear this time please
* Musical instruments or components - You know you don't play the oboe anymore
* Jewelry, watches
* Adult items - I'm not kidding, these items sell (DVDs, toys, etc.)
* Schwag - It surprises me every time, but people really like to buy crap with logos that look like free giveaways
* Kitchen items
* Workout items & sporting goods
* Furniture
* Home Decor
* Toys & Games

The meeting is an opportunity for team members to discuss WH2O’s accomplishments from the past year as well as plan for the upcoming season and future. Furthermore, we will review the finances of the club, approve a budget for 2008-2009 and elect new officers to the Board of Directors. All active & current members are encouraged to attend.
Please save the date. We will be sending out an email year in review as well as absentee ballot information in the coming weeks. If you are interested in running for the board of directors, have questions about the operations of the team or know any topic we should discuss at the annual meeting, please feel free to email me (president at wh2o.org). Additional team infomation and a description of all 9 positions on the board of directors could be found in our Policies & Procedures.
Looking forward seeing the whole team there. Please eMail president@wh2o.org with any questions. Remember this is YOUR team, help make it great.
Thanks for a great past 2 years everyone. It has been a lot of fun being the president of this amazing aquatics club. Maybe I will go hunt moose in Alaska next year. Remember the Garage Sale...I know you have some treasurers to donate.

WEEKEND WORKOUT CHANGE
FYI, Glassell also has another swim meet next Saturday (July 12th). However, with a little more time to find an alternative, hopefully we can practice somewhere else, so STAY TUNED.
Also, for the water polo team, VNSO just notified me that they are hosting diving meets for the next five Sundays (July 6th - August 3rd) so the deep end of the pool will be unavailable until 12:00pm. They forgot this detail when our permits were approved. Anyhow, now you get to sleep in!!! Practice will be from 12:00-2:00pm during this time, starting THIS SUNDAY.
The swim team practice will be unaffected by this swim meet, and will continue as normally scheduled, from 9:00-11:00am.

Double Dip: Competing in both Water Polo and Swimming at DC IGLA '08
by Mike Crosby:
I had another blast playing water polo and swimming for WH2O at IGLA/Gay Games! It is always an exhausting experience, since I like to socialize, perform in Pink Flamingo, and see the city as well. This year, the logistics were especially difficult with a subway AND a shuttle to the swimming pool (in the past it’s been just one or the other), and competitions at remote venues. However, the pools themselves were very nice and it certainly helped WH2O polo that they had us battle QUAC at University of Maryland on the last day in a regulation-sized pool (the Tacoma Park courses were a lil’ small).
Thanks to my coaches and teammates for being understanding of me missing a game and a half (out of 6) and 2 events (out of 8). Those I did make were sportsmanlike and successful: many medals, fast races, steals, assists, and goals. Even better of course was the honor and joy I had competing with such fun, friendly, and fantastic aquaholics.
Congrats to Brian Murphy, Bryan Libit, Luis Bahamón, Mike Baron, and Jackie Cole who were my fellow "ironpeople" this year doing two sports (we won't disclose that the latter two played polo for WH2O but swam for the triumphant Long Beach Grunions ☺). Bernie both swam and coached! Carlos not only swam well but also put up with my always-in-a-rush shenanigans! Hope we can increase the numbers of multi-sport athletes even more at future practices and competitions.
An unexpected but pleasant surprise was being nominated IGLA Co-Chair by Jim Cude, our own Secretary and current IGLA Co-President. Thanks, Jim! Everyone, please feel free to give us (and Bernie) feedback (mikecrosby@post.harvard.edu) to pass on to the planners of Copenhagen 2009 and Cologne 2010. I am especially curious how to get more to the awards banquet/dance party (besides making the tickets more affordable).
For those who like to reminisce, here’s a little list from my eight years on this team. It’s definitely worth considering which “Type” the IGLA is before deciding which sport(s) and events you wish to do. I’ve heard Copenhagen has venues that are very close—NICE!!!
Type 1 (lowest conflicts): One venue with swimming in morning, polo in afternoon
Recent Examples: Sydney 2002, Fort Lauderdale 2004, and Atlanta 2005
Type 2 (medium conflicts): Swimming and water polo simultaneous but at same venue
Recent Example: San Francisco 2003
Type 3 (most conflicts): Swimming and water polo simultaneous and at remote venues
Recent Examples: Toronto 2001, Chicago 2006*, Paris 2007, and DC 2008
*Despite the commute, I remember commending the 13 WH2O athletes competing in at least two aquatic sports at the Gay Games, so it is certainly doable!
See you at the pool or out and about!

A Swimmer's Review of IGLA
From WH2O'er Jon Bauer:
I had the best IGLA ever. I completed my four year term as the IGLA FGG delegate. I had the privilege to represent IGLA at Federation of Gay Games meetings in Koln, London, Lyon, and San Francisco. It is great IGLA Board position. This completes eight years of serving IGLA. IGLA is still in great hands with our new Co-President Jim Cude and Co-Chair, Mike Crosby. Jim did a great job running the IGLA banquet. I am forever retired.
I felt really good with our training and taper. Our 240 plus 4 X 200 relay with Paulo, Neill Weiner, Brian Murphy won a gold medal. I felt great in the water, swam my best times in about twelve years and won all five of my events. Paulo, Neill, Brian, and I set an IGLA record in the 240 plus 4 X 50 relay.
Riding the DC metro and night time dinners provided the opportunity to have quality time with lots of teammates who swim in other lanes or at different workouts.

The Pacific Open Water Challenge (www.pacificopenwater.com) will be on June 29th near Belmont Plaza and thought you and your team members might be interested in the race or the free pre-race open water swimming clinic on June 21st near Belmont Plaza or the Olympic open water swim preview on June 13th (see below), if anyone is in the area.
The newest sport in the Olympics is open water swimming. 50 athletes will swim 10 kilometers in the Beijing Olympic rowing basin and the fight for the gold medal will come down to a frantic sprint where anything goes.
Who are the stars of this sport? What does it take to swim 10,000 meters at a pace close to 1 minute per 100 yards? Where do they train? Why do they do this? How long does it take? And, very importantly, how can you get involved?
Learn the answers at next free Olympic Open Water Swimming Talk in the REI Huntington Beach store on June 13th at 7:00 pm (in the Bella Terra shopping mall off the 405 Freeway at 7777 Edinger Ave. Huntington Beach 92647; tel: 714-379-1938).
Steven Munatones, an International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame inductee and a former USA Swimming National Team open water coach, will explain the sport and show photos and video clips from elite open water races around the world.
The talk will include a special Olympic swimming preview of the battle between two American stars – both from Southern California – and the rest of the world’s best.
The 90-minute presentation is free and will cover the following topics:
1. What is Open Water Swimming?
2. Great Open Water Swims in History
3. Modern-day Open Water Swimming
4. Open Water Swimming Tactics & Strategies
5. How Do You Get Involved?
6. Equipment
7. The Beijing Olympics

IGLA Kick Off Party
This year we have a fabulous afternoon planned with all your team mates and lots of BBQ! Our team mate Jon Bauer and his partner Len have very generously agreed to host this event at their oh so exclusive and oh so fashionable Hollywood Hills home. They have a wonderful back yard with a pool so come prepared for a POOL PARTY and BBQ!!
The festivities will start on Saturday at 3PM and go until Jon kicks us out or 6PM, whichever is earlier :) T
To help pay the costs of the caterer for the BBQ, there will be a charge of between $15-$20 a person. This will be fabulous BBQ food from Zeke’s (we’ve eaten there before and they’ve catered some events for us in the past so we know it’s good!)
Bring your swimming suits, towels, and appetites. This will be THE summer party! See you soon!
Go to the team website http://wh2o.org more for info. As always to attend WH2O events you must be a member of the team in good standing.
Pool Closure Alert
By now most of you have seen the signs posted outside the West Hollywood Pool announcing the pool closure for L.A. Pride. For those of you who have not, the pool will be closed from Tuesday, June 3rd, through Tuesday, June 10th. This is an inconvenience we must deal with every year, but at least this year we have a couple other workouts to choose from. We will still have our practices in other pools as normally scheduled:
VNSO Pool: Tuesday/Thursday 7:00-8:30am; Sunday 9:00-10:30am (plus bonus 30 minutes)
Glassell Pool: Saturday 10:00-11:30am
Additionally, we will keep our Sunday afternoon practice this weekend, June 1st, at WEHO from 3:00-4:30pm for those of you wanting to get in an extra workout before the closure.
While we have not been able to acquire official workout time at other facililities, below is a list of lap swim hours for a few pools. I'd encourage you, especially those of you going to IGLA, to take the initiative to recruit a friend or two for open lap swim. It's always easier with other people.
Culver City Plunge: M-F 6-9am, 11am-1pm (LCM); MWF 6:30-8:30pm (SCY); TTh 6:30-8pm; Sat 7-9am (LCM), 12:15-2pm (SCY)
VNSO Pool: M-F 6-10am, 12-8:30pm (SCY)
Glassell Pool: M-F 6-8am, 12-2:30pm, 3-7pm (SCY)

Sunday Practice Updates
Starting this SUNDAY (May 18, 2008) morning practice will be held at Van Nuys/Sherman Oaks Pool from 9:00-10:30 AM. VNSO pool is located at:
14201 Huston Street,
Sherman Oaks, CA 91423
CLICK HERE FOR GOOGLE MAP
It is off the 101 Freeway, Woodman exit. Parking lot located at Huston & Tyrone.
This will be a permanant change for WH2O until Roosevelt reopens. VNSO is a great outdoor 50 meter pool, and for most people will be closer than Glassell! The pool however, will be setup short course, but will have ample space for our team to practice. We are still looking into the availability of setting up the pool long course in the future, but currently they have other permit groups sharing the pool with us.
In addition, until IGLA the water polo team will be practicing on the other end of the pool at the same time due to the SAMO pool being out of commission. This is a great opportunity for the whole team to practice together leading up to IGLA in June. Swimming will have 10+ lanes in the shallow end and polo will have 6 lanes in the deep end.
Come out to practice on Sunday...get in shape for IGLA...and enjoy the beautiful weather!!

WH2O @ USMS Nationals
Hey WH2O'ers-
I wanted to send a message out to the team with news from this past weekend. 24 team members competed in US Masters Swimming Nationals in Austin, TX and West Hollywood Aquatics had an amazing performance.
The meet started off great with WH2O winning overall, 3 of the 4 distance events, the mens and womens 1650 and the mens 1000.
At the end of the weekend WH2O finished 9th out of 131 teams in the mens scoring and 18th out of 157 teams in the overall scoring! That is a great performance and earned our team a top 10 banner.
Now it is time to gear up for IGLA in Washington, DC. Lets get ready!
